Effective Responses to Sexual Assault
An NIJ impact evaluation found that Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) programs and multidisciplinary Sexual Assault Response Teams (SART):
- Enhance the quality of health care for women who have been sexually assaulted.
- Improve the quality of forensic evidence.
- Increase law enforcement's ability to collect information, file charges, and prosecute and convict the assailant.

According to the International Association of Forensic Nurses, at least 276 SANE programs operate throughout the United States and its territories, most based in hospitals (75 percent), but some located in community settings (25 percent).
