Calming Down: Could Sedative Drugs Be a Less-Lethal Option

NIJ convened a community acceptance panel to discuss pursing research on whether calmative agents might be a possible addition or alternative to law enforcement’s current less-lethal options. The panel — made up of experts from the scientific, toxicological and bioethical communities; civil rights and advocacy organizations; and the legal and law enforcement communities — agreed that pursuing additional research on the safety and viability of calmative agents was reasonable.
