Web Chat on Using DNA to Solve Burglaries
DNA analysis has solved many murder and sexual assault cases. Research shows it increases the chances of making an arrest in burglaries as well. In a field experiment, police found that when they analyzed DNA evidence in property crimes, they identified twice as many suspects and made twice as many arrests. In addition, DNA was five times more effective at identifying a suspect than fingerprints. Suspects identified by DNA had at least twice as many prior felony arrests and convictions as those identified by traditional means.
NIJ and Harvard University are sponsoring a Web chat Exit Notice on Friday, February 27, at 2 p.m. that will discuss the study's implications for police and prosecutors. The event is free, but pre-registration is required.
